Gilaki: From Language Regimes into Minoritizing

The effects of language contact depend on many different factors, such as prestige, government and community support, people’s preference, linguistic proximity the languages, among other things. As such, while there are some broad potentially predictable outcomes in situations contact, it is important to analyze each situation its own context. aim this study examine maintenance social function Gilaki city Lahijan located province Gilan, Iran. This also poses question whether at risk becoming an endangered language. participants (N=395), students a center their families, completed questionnaire with 36 questions. were grouped according gender, age, educational background, occupation, spouse’s mother tongue based self-reported data collection style. questionnaire, inspired by Parasher’s model (1980), examined participants’ use preference six domains family, friendship, neighborhood, transaction, education, administration. findings show statistically significant differences toward Persian all domains. contributes body work lesser analyzed languages sheds light trajectory minoritized languages.
